Electricity
Never touch plugs, switches or electrical appliances with wet hands.
When you buy electrical appliances, ensure that they have not be tampered with.
Switch off and unplug electrical appliances before inspecting or cleaning them.
Avoid using adaptors and never plug one adaptor into another.
If you fit a plug yourself, make sure you wire it properly and always fit the right size fuse.
Use short, undamaged flexes. Never join two pieces of flex together.
Look out for damage and loose connections and get any faults put right at once on plugs.
Any heaters with a time-switch should always be kept clear of curtains and furnishings.
Never hang anything over convector or fan heaters.
All electric blanket should not be used when it's damp, or when it's folded or creased

Gas
Do not use any gas appliances that you think are not working properly. Make sure that ventilation bricks or grilles or outside flues are never covered or blocked. Make sure you have your gas appliances serviced at least once a year by a registered engineer. If you suspect a gas leak, call Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633) immediately. (Do not phone from a mobile phone).

If You Smell Gas
Natural gas has no odor. To help you detect the presence of gas, we add a strong odorant that smells like rotten eggs. If you smell this odor:

• Exit the building immediately.
• Do not use matches, lighters, electrical switches, appliances or your telephone.
• Call your gas supplier by dialing Con Edison: 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).
• Do not re-enter the building, declared safe by Con Edison or another authority
• What safety advice can you give me about carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a very dangerous gas. It is colorless and has no taste or smell. If your gas appliance is faulty, or there is not enough ventilation in the room, carbon monoxide may be produced.

Danger signs:

• Orange or yellow gas flames. Gas flames should be blue.
• Sooty stains or discoloration on or by the appliance.
• You may develop some of the following symptoms: headaches, drowsiness, sickness.
• If you spot any of these signs, phone Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED.
• Always have your gas appliances serviced at least once a year by a registered engineer.
